Fire Safety

It Detects Dead People Too!Image by Cayusa via Flickr(Medford, MA) with the recent bout of house fires here in Medford please make sure to check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working and properly placed. Check the batteries in stand alone units and have a licenced alarm system contractor check hard wired systems. If you are unsure of the correct amount of or placement of your detectors make sure to contact your local fire department. They're more than happy to be of assistance in making sure you're properly protected rather than having to come out and fight a fire at your property. Also make sure you have the correct types of fire extinguishers in place as well as exit routes being clear & easily accessible.

Formulate an evacuation plan NOW within your household, go over what to do with children and what to do if a detector goes off. Your local fire department has excellent materials to assist in this. Make sure that windows, doors etc. are in good working order now in the late summer months/early fall while it's still cool enough to do the work comfortably.

Check on elderly or infirm friends and family to make sure they're equally protected. The old saying when we change the clocks for daylight savings time is time to change/check the batteries in your detectors can be a life saver. Fire Safety is a 24/7 concern and your local fire department is there to assist you in keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Also check to make sure your home insurance coverage or renters insurance is up to date and appropriate for your living situation. A fire loss can be potentially devastating, even in these difficult financial times it's vitally important to make sure you are properly covered.
